Social Media Outreach and Media Arsenal

Social media should be a part of your outreach and media arsenal. More importantly, it needs to be part of the planning strategy.

Whether I attend a show or am part of the show, I am using social media to drive brand and event awareness. If I am in the show, I am working with the event organizers to integrate into the social media plan. However, my experience has been that they usually do not have a plan. Hence, I am the one driving the messaging and the brand.

Through social media, I have nurtured relationships across many topics, such as: art, travel, conservation, poetry and many other topics. When I post on my social media channels, these "Message threads" cross pollinates and attract interest.

I use both my professional camera and smartphone to cover events, I post images to Flickr, write a comment and share my experiences.

On twitter, my tweets have national and international reach. My list has a higher than normal "Actual" follow percentage. Where most lists range from 20-30% active my list is 55-65%. This is because I use organic growth. I do not actively seek followers. Rather, I normally wait for people to follow me then I review their profile before I follow. I refer to this as "Tight" list. This means that my presence at an event will drive eyeballs and awareness.

Often I will be at an event and be retweeted or engaged by someone from California, New York, England or Australia. They like what they see and want to learn more. On several occasions, I have engaged the artist on their behalf.

Keep in mind, this did not happen overnight. This requires relative content and networking and research. Sharing my whereabouts via social media has become a way of life and expected. People have come to live their life vicariously through my art, travel and events.

My reach crosses the spectrum as you will see in my Twitter profile, but here is the short list: spring training, beaches, sunsets, Rays baseball, rugby, art walks, walkabouts, NASA, eco tours, conservation, politics, poetry and much, much more.

I have learned  and now leverage social media to provide brand awareness.
