Social Media's Uphill Battle

A close friend has watched my attempts to educate the non-believers who do not want to use social media for their business, event, charity, or simply do not leverage the experience of those willing to help. She has watched me champion social media as a way to lift the arts and local events in order to drive eyeballs to our city, so we all win! As a result of my experiences, I coined the phrase, “Cities and organizations may tout their social media presence, but they do not leverage it.”

On this particular night I was unable to convince two events to use social media to market their events or build a national fund raising road map to guide their local chapters.

The first was a local event where I was denied a media request to cover the event. Event planners argued for my presence because they know I can drive brand awareness!

The second was a national charity that only used Facebook and no other social media outlets. I could see their blank faces when I talked to them. They did not understand how to leverage social media to build a media plan. Worse, they did not leverage the local social media influencers who would have volunteered to support the charity.

I had even volunteered to help write their national social media plan. I also suggested they send teams to the St. Pete Art Walk and show off their T-shirts to create a buzz! This was only two blocks from their after-party event. They did not.

I purchased a shirt and headed off to St. Pete Art Walk to spread their message. I was asked many times, “Who were all those people running around in different colored shirts?”

Frustrated, I tweeted about these two events some time later. My friend emailed me and she said, “Let me see your forehead. Just want to check severity of bumps and bruises from banging your head on brick walls.”

I compare social media to web design - everyone advertises that they can do it, but do they know how to do it right? Do not pay for their learning curve. Just bring in qualified support!

Moral of the story - If someone is offering advice, then listen. Hire people who can show you real world results!
